Model 848.5, 1762.5 MHz (CDMA) exposure to mice and analysis of gene expression and histopathology

C57BL/6 mice were exposed to 849 or 1763 MHz (CDMA) at whole body exposure levels of 2.4 or 12.2 W/kg, respectively, twice daily for 45 minutes (15 minutes between exposures), 5 days per week, for 10 weeks. Additional mice were exposed as above, but to 12 W/kg brain average using a loop antenna (head only) exposure system. Histopathology, immunochemistry, and molecular analysis were performed. Exposure did not affect cell proliferation or apoptosis in the renal tissues and embryonic fibroblasts, nor were there any pathological differences in exposed animals vs. sham. In addition, there were no effects on expression levels of heat shock proteins (hsp90, hsp70, or hsp27). Phosphorylation of the stress-activated kinases (ERK1/2, JNK1/2, or p38 MAPK) was also not affected. In subsequent studies, the authors used hsp70.1 knockout mice as above, but at a whole body SAR of 0.4 W/kg. The authors report no effects on tissue histopathologically, cell proliferation, or apoptosis in the renal tissues and embryonic fibroblasts. Expression and phosphorylation of heat shock proteins (HSP90, HSP70, and HSP25) and major stress-activated kinases (MAPK, ERK1/2, JNK1/2, p38 MAPK) were also not affected. In a BEMS 2005 presentation, the authors used a gene chip microarray (Macrogen Inc., Seoul, Korea) to analyze gene expression from spleen and brain tissue following exposure. Changes of 2-fold or greater were reported for 23 genes in spleen and 34 genes in brain, although the authors did not indicate whether they felt such changes were real or represented random variations.
