1.9 GHz (CW, PW) exposure to human blood cells and analysis of DNA damage and micronuclei |

Human blood cultures were exposed to 1.9 GHz (CW & PW) RF for 2 hrs at SARs of 0, 0.1, 0.26, 0.92, 2.4 and 10 W/kg. Temperature was maintained at 37.0 ± 0.5°C. Negative (incubator) and positive (1.5 Gy 137Cs radiation) control cultures were run in parallel with each experiment. DNA damage was determined by alkaline comet assay assessing tail ratio, tail moment, comet length and tail length. Micronuclei was determined using the cytokinesis-block micronucleus assay. No evidence of either DNA damage or MN formation was reported. In a subsequent study to address discrepancies reported by Vijaylaxmi et al (2001) and Tice et al (2002), the authors repeated the same study using longer exposure times (24 hours) and again reported no effects of RF. |
