520-1600 kHz (AM) exposure to residents in Italy near the Vatican Radio Broadcast Tower and correlation with cancer |
Details |
|
Residents (n = 49,656) living in a 10 km area around the Vatican Radio transmitter in a northern suburb of Rome, Italy were analyzed for the incidence of lymphatic and hematopoietic cancers. No association was reported for adult cancer, although a slight association was reported between childhood leukemia incidence (8 cases between 1987-1999) and residential proximity within 6 km from the broadcast tower (OR = 2.2, 95% CI: 1.0 - 4.1). In addition, the mortality rate in males and the incidence of childhood leukemia was found to decline with increasing distance from the tower p = 0.03 and 0.036, respectively). The authors admit the obvious limitations of very small numbers (only 8 childhood leukemia cases over 12 years) and the lack of exposure data, and conclude that no causal relationship due to RF exposure from the broadcast tower can be drawn. |
