3-100 MHz (CW) exposure to heat sealer operators and correlation with cancer |
Details |

Dielectric heat sealer operators (mainly female, n= 689) in Grosseto, Italy were analyzed for cancer mortality between October 1, 1962 and September 30, 1992. Surveys revealed that the ICNIRP standard maximal RF exposure limits (10 mW/cm2) were frequently exceeded in the factory. Six cases of cancer in females (all different types) were recorded in the exposed group, and from that data an elevated trend for total cancer incidence was reported (OR 2.0, 95% CI 0.7-4.3). The workers were also exposed to chemical solvents including vinyl chloride. The analysis was based upon only 9 observed deaths of RF heat sealer operators. Chance, other work site exposures, and confounding factors could not be completely ruled out as influencing the small number of cancer related deaths in the exposed cohort. Additional deaths due to accidents and violence were significantly elevated, but not relevant to the issue of RF bioeffects. |
