Human subjects in Denmark (n=800,000 total; n=420,000 mobile phone users) were analyzed to correlate uveal melanoma with mobile phone use. The authors report 8 cases of uveal melanoma in their cohort with 13.5 cases expected (by extrapolation from the age standardized world population average). These findings are in contrast to the findings of Stang et al. (Epidemiology, 2001, 12:7-12) and Holly (Epidemiology, 1996, 7:55-61) who reported an increase in melanoma. In addition, the authors compared the constant/steady rate of uveal melanoma around the world (age standardized world population average per 100,000) with the rapidly increasing rate and significant penetration rate of cell phone use (i.e., a significant percentage of the world population now use cell phones) and showed a lack of any obvious correlation. The authors reported no correlation was observed between eye melanoma and mobile phone use. |
