ID Number 83
Study Type In Vivo
Model 900 MHz (GSM) exposure to rats and analysis of immune parameters(including an adjuvant-induced model of multiple sclerosis)
Details

Sprague Dawley (female) rats (n=50) were exposed or sham exposed to 900 MHz (GSM) RF for 2 hours/day, 10 consecutive days at a whole body average SAR of 0.075 or 0.27 W/kg under far field conditions in an anechoic chamber. No effects were observed due to the 10 day exposure on CD4, CD8, or Ia Ag (RT1.D) expression or mitogenic activity (by MTT assay and flow cytometry) in response to Concanavalin A stimulation. In a study using a rat model of multiple sclerosis, Lewis rats (female; n=4 groups of 8) were injected with purified encephalitogen peptide / myelin basic protein + Mycobacterium tuberculosis + complete Freunds adjuvant in the hind feet to induce neurodegeneration (demyelinating autoimmune reaction). Following injection, rats were sham exposed or exposed to 900 MHz GSM RF for 2 hours/day for 21 days at either 1.5 or 6 W/kg (brain average). No effects due to exposure were observed on circulating azelaic acid, malondialdehyde, NO-cysteine, NO-tryptophane, NO-histadine, or NO2-tyrosine antibodies (a measure of the autoimmune response) or tail or limb paralysis, weight loss, or death. In early experiments, the rats were not acclimated to the 2 hr/day, 21 day exposure / tube restraint, but in a later experiments they were. Acclimation lessened observed stress variation between control and sham / exposed groups, and exposure in the non-acclimated rats actually seemed to decrease these stress effects over the sham group.

In the MS model study, only 8 rats per group were used (EAE + control, EAE+ sham, EAE + 1.5 W/kg, EAE + 6 W/kg), limiting the power of statistical analysis. More studies are planned by the investigators.
