Model 900 MHz (CW, GSM) exposure to E. coli and analysis of ATP synthetase activity
Details

E.coli (strain BL21DE3) were exposed to 900 MHz (CW and GSM) for 30 minutes at 0.5, 1, 2, or 4 W/kg and measured for membrane potential (flow cytometric analysis of DiOC6 incorporation and ATP content via bioluminescence assay ) as a determination of ATP synthetase activity. The authors report with 900 MHz CW exposure an increase in ATP content at 0.5 - 2 W/kg, but no increase vs sham at 4 W/kg, suggesting either a "window" effect or an adaptive response at higher exposure levels. Further, when the GSM modulated 900 MHz signal was used, ATP and membrane potential was also increased at the 4 W/kg level. In a subsequent study, E. coli exposed to 2450 MHz PW RF were reported to have significant alterations in membrane integrity (as measured by propidium iodide).

Comments

The authors suggest their initial reportred results were supportive of Litovitz et al (Bioelectromagnetics 1993 14:395-403) and the requirement of a coherent signal that can be demodulated by cells & tissues for bioeffects to occur. Later studies of membrane integrity were likely due to significant local heating during exposure.
