Study Type In Vivo
Model 42 GHz (CW) exposure to mice and analysis of immune parameters and inflammation.
Details

NMRI mice were exposed to 42 GHz mm waves for 20 minutes at SARs between 15 - 225 W/kg at the skin surface. The authors reported no observable heating in the animals. The authors report mm wave exposure augmented the anti-inflammatory effects of diclofenac using a footpad edema assay. In another report, three hours after exposure (as above), animals were sacrificed and circulating lymphocytes as well as spleen and thymic lymphocytes were isolated and analyzed by comet assay for DNA damage. Although no effects were observed on the DNA of circulating lymphocytes, the DNA of splenic lymphocytes became less compact and the DNA of thymic lymphocytes became more compact. The authors suggest these effects are due to some indirect effect of the mm wave exposure. Subsequent reports by the authors further suggest that 42.2-42.6 GHz at 0.1 to 0.7 mW/cm(2), but not 43.0 or 61.22 GHz, can reduce inflammation by 20%
