Medical Devices in Europe were tested using 400 MHz (NMT), 400 MHz (Tetra), 800 MHz (NMT & GSM), and 1800 MHz (GSM) cell phones operating at full power by placing them in test mode (constant transmission without network connections) using the ANSI C63.18 ad hoc test protocol / IEC 1000-4-3 basic test standard. At full power, 400 MHz Tetra, 900 MHz NMT, and 1.8 GHz GSM operated at 1-watt peak, while the 900 MHz GSM operated at 2 watts peak. The 3 V/m field strength (current immunity level set for most medical devices by IEC 606010-1-2) was exceeded at distances closer than 2-3 meters away. Many medical devices, however, were immune to RF emissions even in close proximity, although significant interference was observed in some medical devices. Interference was observed using the higher power 400 MHz transmitters at distances within 3 meters, to a slightly lesser extent with the 900 MHz cell phone transmitters (at distances less than 70 cm), and even less with 1800 MHz phones (at distances less than 5 cm). The authors recommend characterization and management of EMC issues in a given facility. |
