Model 2450 MHz (CW) exposure to chick eggs and analysis of thermal gradients
Details

Leghorn chicken eggs were exposed to 2450 MHz (CW) MW for 5 minutes at SARs of 80-120 W/kg. Thermal gradients in the eggs were mapped using a series of thermocouples inserted into the egg. A persistent temperature gradient was observed between the central yolk and the outer white, with the yolk 4 degrees C warmer than the white 5 min after termination of exposure, and more than 2 degrees C warmer 60 min afterward. No temperature gradient was noted when the contents of the egg were stirred by the thermal probe before irradiation. The authors suggest this gradient may have resulted in mis-interpretation of studies in which “athermal” MW exposures induced teratogenesis.
