Model 915, 960 MHz (CW) exposure to rat and turtle hearts and analysis of beating rate
Details

Isolated and perfused hearts from rat and turtle were exposed to 915 or 960 MHz (CW) RF for 10 minutes at SARs between 1.5-2.5 W/kg between parallel plates in a Faraday cage. Exposure resulted in significant bradycardia (decrease in beat frequency). In the presence of atropine (which blocks parasympathetic transmission) MW exposure produced tachycardia, and in the presence of propanolol (which blocks sympathetic transmission) MW exposure produced bradycardia. In the presence of both atropine plus propanolol, no effects of MW exposure were observed. The authors interpret the lack of an effect with atropine + propanolol as indicating microwaves interact directly with parasympathetic or sympathetic nerves and do not cause their effects by generalized heating of tissue.
