Swiss-Cox mice were exposed to 2.45-GHz (CW) MW for 10-minutes in a waveguide (TE10 mode) at SARs of 23.7, 45.5, 54.2, or 97.7 W/kg. Exposures increased rectal temperature by 1.5, 2.0, 3.8, and 7.2 C, respectively. Microwave exposure was repeated at 1, 2, 4, and 8 days after peripheral JEV virus inoculation. Lethality (indicating virus permeability through the BBB) was increased in a dose-dependent fashion, and at the highest exposure level was 4 fold that of control animals. Mice did not become tolerant or sensitized by pre-microwave exposure. Although no hypothesis for a mechanism was offered, thermal effects at these high exposure levels are likely. |
