900 MHz (GSM) exposure to human volunteers and analysis of physiologic parameters that might explain reported subjective symptoms |
Details |
|
Human volunteers (n = 11) were exposed to a 900 MHz GSM (Motorola Star Tac 130) phone for 30 minutes and analyzed for skin temperature, respiratory air flow, respiratory NO levels, and nasal cavity dimensions. After 6 minutes, a 2.3 degree C skin temperature rise on the nostril and occipital area was recorded. The investigators also reported a decrease in air flow through the nose as measured by rhinometry on the side of the face the phone was held against, and suggested this might be a result of dilated blood vessels. Use of the cellular telephone also caused small increases in respiratory NO, although none of the increases was statistically significant. All changes returned to normal 5 minutes after cell phone exposure was terminated. The authors further suggested that dilated blood vessels might also account for reports of headaches while using cell phones. |
