Model 1300, 2450 MHz (CW) exposure to rats and analysis of behavior and attenuation of drug-induced hypothermia
Details

Long Evans rats were exposed to 2450 MHz (CW) RF at an average SAR of 0.3 W/kg for 45 minutes and then treated with ethanol to induce hypothermia. In addition, some rats were previously injected with the neurotoxin 6-OHDA (to lesion central noradrenergic neurons) or the beta-adrenergic antagonists propranolol or CGP-12177 (to antagonize EtOH-induced hypothermia). Microwave exposure attenuated EtOH hypothermia (especially at lower doses of EtOH), but did not effect the development of tolerance to EtOH hypothermia. In rats given 6-OHDA + EtOH, microwave exposure also attenuated EtOH hypothermia. Propanolol antagonized EtOH hypothermia in a dose dependent manner, and microwave exposure eliminated the propanolol effect. CGP-12177 antagonized EtOH induced hypothermia, but microwave exposure had an additive effect with CGP-12177. The authors interpret these results as indicating a NE mediation of EtOH-induced hypothermia, and suggest that microwave exposure in some way mimics the role of beta-adrenergic antagonists. In a previous study it was found that the thermal threshold to induce convulsions in rat pups using 918 MHz (CW) exposure for 10 minutes was either 9.4 W/kg for 13 day old rats or 18.0 W/kg for 17 day old rats, suggesting an age dependent threshold. The authors also showed that brain tissue had a faster equilibration rate than colonic temperature.
