1.2 GHz (CW,PW) exposure of rats and analysis of behavior and drug response |
Details |

Sprague Dawley rats were exposed to 1.2 GHz (CW, PW) at average powers of between 20 and 650 uW/cm2 and analyzed for behavior, brainstem response, and opioid response. In an initial study, Sprague Dawley rats were injected with chlordiazepoxide and exposed to 1.2 GHz (PW - 20 usec pulse width, 11 pps) with an average incident power density of 8 uW/cm2 (no SAR provided) for 30 minutes from a horn antenna in an anechoic chamber in tests designed to provoke emotionality and aggression. Exposure reduced stereotypic responses associated with chlordiazepoxide injection. Further, in rats treated with naloxone or haloperidol, exposure increased tail flick latency. In an earlier study, exposure of Wistar rats to 1.2 GHz (PW- 0.5 msecond pulse width, 1000 pps) with a power density of 0.2mW/cm2 was also shown to block the tail flick latency effects of apomorphine. The authors conclude that RF exposure acts on the dopamine-opiate system. In other studies, Sprague Dawley rats were exposed to 1.3 GHz (CW & PW - 0.5 msec pulse width, 1000 pps) at average power of between 20 and 650 uW/cm2 during a 5 minute sparring session. RF exposure substantially reduced aggressive behavior at incident average power densities of 50 uW/cm2 and above. No effects were observed at 20 uW/cm2. |
