Model 836.55 MHz (FM & TDMA) exposure to rats and analysis of brain tumors (ENU-initiated bioassay)
Details

Fisher 344 (pregnant) rat dams and pups were exposed to 836.55 MHz (FM or TDMA) RF (7.5 minute on / 7.5 minute off cycle) during the fetal, pup, and adult stages throughout their ~2 year lifetime. Pregnant dams were injected with ENU (4 mg/kg) on gestation day 18 to produce ~15% brain tumor incidence in the litter pups to see if RF affected tumor promotion or progression. Fetal and pup exposures were carried out for 2 hr/day, 5 days/wk in the far field using an anechoic chamber from day 19 gestation through 21 days of age. Calculated whole-body SAR of the dams ranged from 0.3-0.7 W/kg, fetal brain average SAR = ~0.3 W/kg, and pup brain average SAR = ~0.1 W/kg. When the pups reached 32 days of age (weaning), they were exposed in a carousel restraining exposure system for 2 hr/day, 4 days/wk, in the near field for 2 years with an SAR of 1.1-1.6 W/kg (brain average). No effects on brain tumor incidence were observed with 836.55 MHz FM or TDMA exposure alone or in combination with ENU initiation when all animals were analyzed together. The authors reported a slight "protective" effect with TDMA exposure alone and TDMA in combination with ENU, decreasing the number of CNS tumors when only preterm rats (animals that died prior to the termination of the protocol) were analyzed.
