Study Type In Vivo
Model 900 MHz (CW, GSM) exposure tp CBA/S mice and analysis of cancer and pathology (X-ray initiated lymphoma bioassay)
Details

CBA/S mice were exposed to 902 MHz (CW, GSM) in rectangular waveguides for 1.5 hr/day, 5 days/wk for 17 months using either a NMT 900 cellular phone (CW) at an SAR of 1.5 W/kg, or alternatively using a modified GSM 900 cellular phone (GSM) at an average SAR of 0.35 W/kg. These were the same animals used by Heikkanen and Juutilianen to perform analysis of urinary melatonin metabolite (aMT6s) levels (Electro- and Magnetobiology (1999), 18: 33-42) as well as a radiation induced mouse lymphoma bioassay (Radiation Research (2001) 156:775-85). In the present study, a "blind" histopathological re-evaluation of all pre-neoplastic and neoplastic lesions in all organs and tissues from the long-term carcinogenicity study. As in the main-study no difference with respect to the number of tumor-bearing animals and the total number of tumours and with respect to the organ-related incidence of pre-neoplastic and neoplastic findings was observed between the groups receiving only ionizing radiation and the groups which had additional radio frequency (RF) or 50 Hz magnetic field (ELF) exposure. Start date June 1998, end date May 1999.
