Model 1.7, 2.45 GHz (CW) exposure to rats and analysis of blood brain barrier permeability
Details

Sprague Dawley (male) rats were injected with [14C] sucrose or [3H] inulin and exposed for 30 minutes to either 2450 MHz (CW) (2, 4 and 6 W/kg)or 1.7 GHz (CW & PW-0.5-usec pulse width, 1000 pulses/sec) microwaves for 30 minutes at average SARs in the head of 0.1 W/kg (peak SAR of 200 W/kg for PW exposures). Following 2450 MHz exposure, sucrose uptake was increased but this was shown to be a thermalizing effect of the microwave exposure. Exposure at 1.7 GHz (designed to follow up previous work by Oscar and Hawkins - Brain Research (1977) 126(2):281-93) also showed no change in uptake of tracer due to microwave exposure, although the authors suggest possible changes in blood flow at these low power levels could not be ruled out. These results did not confirm BBB effects reported by Oscar and Hawkins (1977) and Albert(1977, 1979).
