Study Type Epidemiology
Model 900, 1800 MHz (NMT, GSM, W-CDMA) mobile phone use and correlation with brain and hematopoietic cancer (in addition to INTERPHONE study)
Details

Case control study of 1000 brain tumor patients and 900 leukemia patients (plus an equal number of controls) in south east England and analysis of any correlation with mobile phone use. In a related study using much of the data collected during the Interphone project, the authors collected cases if pituitary tumors (n = 291 from regional hospital and Thames Cancer Registry data) and interviewed them by phone regarding their mobile phone use. The exposure assessment followed the Interphone protocol. The authors report no significant correlation between pituitary tumors and mobile phone use (OR = 1.0, 95%CI 0.5 - 1.9) and no statistically significant correlation with 10+ yrs and greater than 51 hours of use (OR = 1.6, 95%CI 0.8 - 3.6), although it was somewhat elevated. The authors conclude no association was apparent from their analysis and noted that recall error may have been a confounding variable.
