Model 900, 1800 MHz (GSM) exposure to cells and analysis of internal Ca++ levels
Details

Djungarian hamster pinealocytes (primary culture) and differentiated Y79 human retinoblastoma cells were exposed in a perfusion chamber to 900 or 1800 MHz (GSM) RF in rectangular waveguides and analyzed for free intracellular Ca++ levels (pre-, during, and post-exposure) by Fura-2 imaging. Each experiment consisted of 3 intervals of 500 seconds each (baseline, sham or exposure, positive control by chemical stimulation). In each experiment 1 to 72 pinealocytes (mean = 7.3) or 1 to 35 differentiated Y79 cells (mean = 11.9), attached to the bottom of the chamber, were measured simultaneously over 25 minutes in measuring buffer at 36.5° C ±0.5° C with a time resolution of 0.1 Hz. A total of 755 hamster pinealocyte single registrations (448 exposed, 307 sham exposed) at 900 MHz exposure (SAR 0.08 W/kg or 13 W/kg) or 1800 MHz exposure (SAR 0.08 W/kg or 24 W/kg) and a total of 214 differentiated human retinoblastoma cell single registrations (139 exposed, 75 sham exposed) at 900 MHz exposure (SAR 13 W/kg) were evaluated (mean plots for each condition) and also statistically analyzed by single calcium peak counts. No effects, apart from some spectacular outliers (strongly positive or negative reactions) in case of pinealocytes, were observed as a result of the RF exposure. In contrast, positive controls forskolin (for retinoblastoma cells) and norepinephrine (for pinealocytes) were able to produce calcium mobilization in 72% and 91%, respectively, of the cells. Only those cells responding clearly to the positive control were included for evaluation. Start date July 1998, manuscript in preparation
