ID Number 270
Study Type In Vivo
Model 900, 1800 MHz (GSM), 2 GHz (UMTS) exposure to rats and analysis of brain oxidative stress
Details

Sprague Dawley rats were exposed to 900 MHz (GSM) signals at 1 or 4 W/kg for 2 hr/day, 5 days and dissected brains assayed by the TBA method for malondialdehyde production as a measure of lipid peroxidation. No effects were observed in the hippocampus, cerebellum, or the remaining portions of the rat brain. In a related study, the group exposed Wistar-Han rats (n = 8) with 1800 MHz (GSM) and 2 GHz (UMTS) signals at 2.8 or 2.6 W/kg, respectively, using the above head-first loop exposure system for 2 hrs/day as either a signal exposure or for 5 days/week for 4 weeks. The authors report in young rats the repeated exposure to UMTS signals resulted in a decrease in lipid peroxidation in the hippocampus. No effects were observed with 1800 MHz GSM. No effects were observed from either GSM or UMTS exposure in older rats.
