Human subjects (electric utility workers) occupationally exposed to both power-frequency (50 and 60 Hz) and RF (PW) emissions were analyzed for tumor incidence in a nested case-control study (2,679 cancer cases in 21,749 Hydro Quebec (HQ) workers [1970 and 1988] and 170,000 Electricite de France-Gaz de France (EDF) workers [1978 and 1989]). For all cancers combined, and for lung cancer, there was a significant increase in incidence with the highest RF exposure (OR = 1.39 & 3.11, respectively). This correlation was largely associated with the Hydro Quebec workers. No association was observed between RF and leukemia, lymphoma, melanoma, or brain tumors. Cancers of the lip, buccal cavity, and pharynx and stomach showed a nonsignificant trend towards an association with PEMF exposure. |
