Model Leukemia incidence and residential proximity to radiobroadcast towers

Children living near a military installation with low-frequency radio towers transmitting at 23.4 kHz were analyzed for leukemia in a case control study. This study was initiated in response to a cluster of 12 leukemias diagnosed between 1979-1990 in 7 girls and 5 boys (ranging in age from less than 1 to 12 years old at the time of diagnosis) living on the Waianae Coast, Oahu, Hawaii. Seven cases were acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) and 5 were acute nonlymphocytic leukemia (ANLL). Historical data was collected by unblinded phone interview. Although an excess of leukemias was observed in children living within 2.6 miles of the radio towers, it was not statistically significant and may have been confounded by other factors such as socioeconomic status, exposure to petroleum products, or ionizing radiation
