ID Number 232
Study Type Human / Provocation
Model 900 MHz (GSM-like) exposure and melatonin, cortisol, neopterin, & IgA levels
Details

Human volunteers (n=8) were exposed to circularly polarized 900 MHz (GSM-modulated at 217 Hz) in an anechoic chamber with the source positioned 10 cm behind the head with an incident power density of 1W/m2 (described as similar to the incident RF from a cellular telephone) and a calculated SAR of 0.2 - 0.4 W/kg (peak over 10 grams of tissue). Subjects underwent 20 sessions of 4 hours (10 exposure, 10 sham exposure in random order) delivered either during the day (12:00 – 16:00) or night (22:00 – 2:00). Salivary samples were taken every ½ hour during, as well as several hours after, exposure for melatonin, cortisol, and neopterin levels. IgA levels were also monitored as a measure of possible melatonin effects on cytokine release from lymphocytes and modulation of cell functions. No effects were observed. No confirmation of transient (during first hour of exposure) spike in cortisol levels with RF exposure (Mann et al., 1998, Neuroendocrinology 67:139-144)

Findings No Effects
