Collagen gels and primary chondrocytes embedded in collagen were exposed to 50 Hz (pulsed electromagnetic field) for 24 hours. The authors report exposed collagen gel was more hydrophobic and less susceptible to enzymatic degradation than non-exposed samples. Chondrocytes assayed 3 weeks after exposure had an increased proliferation rate and lower glycosaminoglycan (GAG) production. In addition, exposed chondrocytes showed ~2 fold increased expression of aggrecan, type I, II, and X collagen mRNAs but not in histological staining. The authors suggest PEMF exposures might promote collagen-embedded chondrocytes to proliferate and help with cartilage tissue repair. |
