Model 60 Hz ELF exposure to rats and analysis of estrogen alpha and beta receptor RNA
Details

Wistar rats (male and female) were exposed to 60 Hz ELF for 2 hr/day for 9 days at 1 milliT using a Helmholtz coil and estrous cycles were monitored. In addition, other rats were ovariectomized and either supplimented or not with 17-beta-estradiol, exposed as above, and olfactory bulbs were isolated and analyzed for mRNA expression of estrogen receptor-alpha (ERalpha) and -beta (ERbeta) mRNA. The authors report that ELF exposure resulted in a biphasic effect on ER-beta expression in females, which increased during diestrous and decreased during estrous. No effect on ER-beta was observed in males, and no effect in males or females was observed on ER-alpha expression.
