Sprague Dawley rats were exposed to 840 MHz signals for 3 hr/day for 2 or 14 days at a power density fo 60 microW/cm2. On day 58 after exposure behavioral testing was performed, and on day 60 after expousre pathology in the hippocampal region of the brain (involved in learning, memory, spatial navagation, emotion) was evaluated. The study was designed to address prior reports of hippocampal neuron death by Salford et al. (Environ Health Perspect 111:881-883, 2003). The authors report no effect in bahavioral tests. In some exposed animals, however, there was a decrease in locomotor activity, increased grooming and a tendency of increased basal corticosterone levels. The authors suggest mobile phone exposure may lead to abnormal brain function. |
