800 MHz (GSM) exposure to rabbit testes and analysis of sexual behavior as well as sperm survival and motility |
Details |
|
New Zealand rabbits were exposed to 800 MHz GSM RF using a mobile phone hooked to the network as an exposure source and mounted directly under the cage beneath the general area of the testes. The rabbits were partially restrained in the cages so they could not change position during the 8 hour / day exposure that ran for 12 weeks. The authors approximate the whole body average exposure as 0.43 W/kg using numerical modeling, but no estimation of the SAR in the testes. The authors report a significant drop in sperm concentration and motility after the 8th week of exposure. No change in core temperature, body weight, weight of the testicular tissue, morphology of sperm, or testosterone levels was observed. The authors suggest a non-thermal effect of the RF exposure on sperm development. In a subsequent study, exposure using a mobile phone in "standby position" for 8 hr/day for 12 weeks resulted in altered (reduced) rabbit copulatory behavior. In a subsequent study, the authors report 900 MHz exposure to restrained male rabbits (n = 30) using a mobile phone strapped to the cage at the level of the testes resulted in a decrease in fructose as well as motile sperm. |
