Model 2 GHz (UMTS) exposure to human lymphocytes in combination with X-rays and analysis of chromosome rearrangements
Details

Human lymphocytes from several donors (n = 4) were exposed (or not exposed) to 4 Gy of X-rays and then immediately after were exposed (or not exposed) to 2 GHz (UMTS) at either 0.5 or 2 W/kg for 24 hours. Cells were then counted for aberrant chromosomes using fluorescent in situ hybridization. The authors report no effect of RF exposure alone, and no overall increase in the number of cells containing aberrant chromosomes following RF exposure. However, the number of aberrant chromosomes per cell was increased by 0.11 events with RF exposure. The authors suggest RF exposure may affect DNA repair or alter the cell death pathway in response to damage. The authors also observed significant inter-individual sensitivity to X-ray exposure alone.
