In a recent review (2007) of literature on cochlear implant interference due to electromagnetic energy, the authors focused on several sources (e.g.,MRI, static discharge, RF therapy). However, a few studies reported on compatibility between cochlear implants and the use of mobile phones. One survey study in Finland (Sorri et al, 2001) reported ~50 of CI patients used a mobile phone, and those that had a body-worn processor had more EMI issues in general (as opposed to smaller behind-the-ear processors). Another study (Cray et al, 2004) also reported problems with sound quality when using a mobile phone, although these same issues were also present with conventional land-line phones and may not have been completely due to EMI. In a related paper, the authors address SAR issues in the inner ear from mobile phone use with a cochlear implant and conclude no significant alterations that would cause current SAR limits to be exceeded. |
