Residents in Tasmania diagnosed with leukaemia, lymphoma and related conditions (n = 854) between 1972 and 1980 were evaluated for correlations with residential proximity to power lines. The authors report residential proximity to high-voltage power lines (within 300 meters) during the first 15 years of life had a 3x increased risk of leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma (OR = 3.23; 95% CI 1.268.29), and living 300 meters from powerlines from ages 0-5 was associated with a 5x increase (OR 4.74; 0.9822.9). The authors reported a dose response, with every year lived within 50 meters of a power line increasing the risk by 7%, as well as an increased risk with higher voltages. |
