Human subjects (n=40) responded to a notice for volunteers posted in a major medical journal in 1996. Respondants were administered a questioneer concerning subjective disorders. They described acute sensations of heat or headaches in the occipital-temporal regions of the head, mainly occuring during the call, and sometimes later that day. The symptoms disappeared shortly after cellular telephone use. 16 individuals suffered symptoms every time they used the phone. At least one office had a clustering of respondants who were symptomatic. Of the complaintants, 75% were users of digital phones. Some had complaints of pain at the waist (for belt worn units). |
