Model Measurement of E-field and H-field levels surrounding various medical devices in several Malaysian hospitals
Details

Survey of ELF (50 Hz) and RF (above 80 MHz) levels and identification of sources (both fixed and mobile) in several Malaysian hospitals (4 in the Kelang Valley, Univ Malaya Medical Centre, Hospital Kuala Lumpur, Hospital Selayang, and Hospital Putrajaya). The authors made measurements field probes in the ICU, CCU and Cardiac Angiography rooms and reported mean ambient E-fields from 2.17 to 3.39 V/m. Mean ambient magnetic fields ranged from 0.024 to 0.102 A/m. E-field strength outside 4 of the hospitals ranged from 2.30 to 3.44 V/m. The authors report distance from sources and location within the room greatly influenced E- and H- field measurements. All E-field measurements were reported below IEC 60601-1-2 standards (2001) (i.e., 10 V/m for life supporting equipment) but at distances of less than 0.3 meters some devices emitted E-fields higher than IEC 1993 (i.e., 3.0 V/m for life supporting equipment). Some devices also emitted H-field levels higher than the latest IEC 60601-1-2 standard (i.e., 3.0 A/m).
