900 MHz (GSM) exposure to adults and children and analysis of EEG |
Details |

Human volunteers (n = 10 men, 10 children [12 yrs old]) were exposed to a 900 MHz (GSM) mobile phone RF while awake and analyzed for brain wave activity using a 16-channel telemetric EEG monitor (ExpertTM®). EEG recordings were made before (sham exposure) and during (exposure) a call, always in that order. Actual exposure dose during exposure was not defined. The authors report for adult volunteers an increased spectral power in the 2.56.0 Hz band after 20-40 seconds of exposure in the contralateral frontal and temporal areas lasting for ~1 second and repeated every 15-20 seconds. This increased spectral power disappeared once the phone was turned off. In children, the increase was more pronounced, affected a lower frequency band (1.0-2.5 Hz), and occurred after only10-20 seconds of exposure. The authors suggest mobile phones reversibly influence human brain activity.
