Study Type Epidemiology
Model 27, 915 MHz diathermy and case study evaluations of adverse side effects
Details

Several patients exposed to hyperthermia (27, 915 MHz) either alone or in combination with other treatments (e.g., ionizing radiation) were analyzed for adverse symptoms. The authors report complaints such as numbness and tingling in the ipsilateral arm when the chest was being treated with 915 MHz plus ionizing radiation. There was no correlation with power leve, however (the sensation would saturate at power densities below those used for therapeutic heating). One patient reported severe "burning", and one demonstrated a motor deficit. Sensitive patients were sporadically distributed throughout the patient population. The authors also report cases of hypotensive episodes (syncopy, hypotension, bradycardia similar to a Bezold-Jarisch reflex) during 915 MHz diathermy exposure in specific patients with superficial lymph node tumors in the subdigastric region overlying the carotid artery. In other studies, the authors describe spurious transmission patterns that can sometimes result from diathermy that can lead to undetected high power densities well away from the target volume.
