Model VDU exposure to workers and analysis of skin hypersensitivity
Details

Office workers (n = 4943) in Sweden as well as cases previously identified with facial skin symptoms (n = 163) were surveyed by questionnaire to examine possible correlations with video display unit use. Questionnaire information was supplemented by information from clinical examinations, a survey of psychosocial factors at work, building data and VDT-related factors from inspection and measurements taken at the work site. Initial findings indicated female gender, asthma/rhinitis, high psychosocial work load, visual display unit use, and paperwork were related to an increased prevalence of facial skin symptoms. More detailed analysis from a follow-up study (including many of the previous participants to examine long-term effects) reported an increased occurrence of skin symptoms correlated with a number of factors including VDU use, psychosocial conditions, atopic dermatitis, indoor air quality (paper exposure and cleaning frequency), etc. Further, many facial skin symptoms among VDU workers were transitory and there was no obvious correlation with magnetic or electric field strength measurements.
