A series of case control studies looking at occupational exposure to a variety of chemical and physical agents. Studies relevant to RF or ELF include a case-control study of testicular cancer patients (n = 101 seminoma, 47 embryonal testicular cancer) with suggested correlations with amateur radio operators (OR 2.2; 95% CI 0.7-6.6), work with radar equipment (OR 2.0; 95% CI 0.3-14.2) engineers in electronics and telecommunication industry (OR 2.3; 95% CI 0.8-6.7),. These correlations were not statistically significant, largely based upon the small number of patients in the analysis. Work with video display units for extended periods of time gave a statistically significant correlation (OR 1.8; 95% CI 1.1-3.2). Significant correlations were also reported with plastics work (OR = 2.9; 95% CI 1.3-6.5), farming (OR 3.1; 95% CI 1.03-9.1), contact with farm animals (OR 3.3; 95% CI 1.00-10.9), and exposure to insects repellents [N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide, DEET] (OR 1.7; 95% CI 1.03-2.8). In a separate study, cases of female papillary thyroid cancer (n = 185) were analyzed for correlations with occupational exposure, and the authors report correlations with work as dentist/dental assistant, teacher, shoemaker, and warehouse worker with undefined chemicals, x-rays, and video display terminals indicated as risk factors |
