Study Type In Vitro
Model Studies of the structure and function of enzymes (acetylcholinesterase, lactoperoxidase and horseradish peroxidase) exposed to 900 and 1800 MHz (GSM).
Details

Purified electric eel AChE enzyme was exposed to 915 or 1822 MHz (GSM) RF at an estimated SAR of ~ 0.51 W/kg (using a phone hooked up to the network in receive mode) positioned 5 cm from the purified enzyme for 1, 5, 10, 20, or 50 minutes. Sample temperature was maintained at 25.0 degrees C. The authors report longer RF exposures (20 minutes) resulted in enzyme monomer formation (polymer degeneration) lasting over 24 hours (suggesting it was irreversible) but did not alter the enzyme secondary structure. Letter to the Editor by Ardoino, Pinto, and Lovisolo. AUTHORS' ABSTRACT: Barteri et al. 2015 (IEEE #5834): This work shows the effects of exposure to an electromagnetic field at 900 MHz on the catalytic activity of the enzymes lactoperoxidase (LPO) and horseradish peroxidase (HRP). Experimental evidence that irradiation causes conformational changes of the active sites and influences the formation and stability of the intermediate free radicals is documented by measurements of enzyme kinetics, circular dichroism spectroscopy (CD) and cyclic voltammetry.
