Review of various spectrum analyzers to be used in the compliance check / assessment of UMTS base stations. Two equipment options exist for measurement of the UMTS spread spectrum (5 MHz) high noise floor signal: one with a vector signal analyzer and the other with a conventional signal analyzer. The authors explain that verification of compliance requires obtaining the contribution of each active carrier to the total electric field value, which requires integrating the power spectral density over the entire carrier band of 5 MHz. The authors describe the results of both laboratory and in situ measurements using an Agilent model E4402B digital spectrum analyzer set at different values for resolution bandwidth, video bandwidth, and sweep time. For the lab studies, a UMTS Agilent model E4438C signal generator was used with a 2.1 GHz central frequency, nominal output power of -10 dB m, and measured input power of -10.4 dBm. The POSITIVE PEAK detector demonstrated an overestimation (max ~9 dB) of the power both in laboratory and in field measurements. SAMPLE and RMS detectors gave ~ identical results, with a difference in the range of 0.3-0.4 dB in the laboratory and larger in the field. Based upon the findings, the authors recommend use of RMS function when measuring UMTS base station emissions, which processes the entire sample required for each pixel with a long sweep time. |
