0.2-20 MHz broadband exposure and analysis of hsp70 expression, apoptosis, oxidative stress, and tissue function in rat heart muscle tissue |
Details |

Rats were exposed to broadband RF (0.2-20 MHz) at two exposure levels, either 30 V/m (11.4 microT) for two minutes a day or 200 V/m (36.1 microT) for ten minutes a day. The high exposure group received thermal levels of exposure (as determined by inner ear core temperature measurements). This particular band carries many different technologies including AM broadcast radio, short wave / HAM radio, industrial sealers and MW applicators, marine ship-to-shore, etc that might have been of interest to the investigators. Following exposure, the animals were sacrificed and aortas mounted on a perfusion system and examined for tolerance to ischemia and reperfusion. Heart tissue was also analyzed for apoptosis, HSP70 expression, plasma markers of oxidative stress, morphological changes, and tolerance to ischemia-reperfusion. Exposure at either level had no effect on apoptosis or animal weight. High level exposure resulted in mitochondrial damage with a slight HSP70 expression, higher oxidative stress, although the hearts recovered from ischemia as well as the control hearts. In rats exposed at the lower level, there was no mitochondrial damage and a corresponding 32% increase in HSP70 expression over both the control and high-intensity exposure groups. There was also a significant increase in end-diastolic and perfusion pressures. The authors suggest the HSP70 level might have a protective effect that is correlated with improved ventricular function recovery after cardiopelegic arrest and increased myocardial tolerance to ischemia. |
