Model 1-3 GHz exposure and modeling of SAR distribution and heating due to various metallic implants using FDTD models
Details

A range of canonical implants is used for modeling consisting of rods, dipoles and broken loops in an infinite tissue medium exposed to a plane wave. The analyses are conducted using the computational package Feko. In addition, FDTD analysis of specific implants is used: A representative list of implants (e.g. screw, rod, loop, disk, wire, plate, etc) in different parts of a human body using the computational package XFDTD at those frequencies and body locations identified above where high localized SARs are expected. The analysis was undertaken to help develop guidelines for assessing the impact of metallic implants on compliance with peak localized SAR limits in workers exposed to the occupational/controlled limits for RF fields specified in the 1998 ICNIRP Guidelines and the IEEE C95.1 Standard in the frequency range of 1 MHz to 3GHz. In addition, a thermal analysis of implants is performed to determine if the peak tissue temperature rise around implants might exceed 1°C if peak localized SAR limits of ICNIRP 1998 or IEEE C95.1 are exceeded. A finite difference (FD) code was developed to implement Penne's bioheat equation. Analyses are conducted for those implant cases identified above, in order to determine if permissible temperature rise thresholds are exceeded. The results of this study will be published in the EMF Dosimetry Handbook.
