Isolated guinea pig heart muscle cells and cultured human Jurkat T-lymphocytes were exposed to various carrier frequencies (between 900 and 1900 MHz) with pulse modulations of 0, 16, 50, 217 Hz and 30 kHz for 500 seconds. The SAR varied with carrier frequency and pulse modulation between 9 and 59 mW/kg (e.g. 900 MHz, 217 Hz pulse frequency: 15.4 mW/kg; 1800 MHz, 217 Hz pulse frequency: 8.6 mW/kg). Exposure was performed in a TEM-cell developed specifically for this study. Intracellular calcium concentration was measured by means of fura-2 fluorescent dye. For heart cells, additional long term experiments (exposure for 120 min) were performed. The authors reported no effect of weak (non-thermal) high frequency electromagnetic fields on the intracellular calcium concentration of cells, regardless of carrier frequency or modulation. |

The study in neuroblastoma cells was a direct replication of Dutta et al (Bioelectromagnetics 1984, 5(1):71-78 and Bioelectromagnetics 1989, 10:197-202). No validation of the original Dutta et al findings was observed. FGF database ID# G3, FGF contract# 5930 |
