Model 400 MHz (Tetra), 900 & 1800 MHz (GSM), 2 GHz (UMTS) exposure to mice (AKR/J) and analysis of cancer and pathology

AKR/J mice exposed to either 400 MHz (Tetra), 900 & 1800 MHz (GSM), or 2 GHz (UMTS) signals and analyzed for pathology and cancer. An initial study reported at BEMS in 2004 used female AKR/J mice that are viremic from birth and spontaneously develop thymic lymphoblastic lymphoma within one year. The mice were exposed at 900 MHz (GSM-like) for 24 hours per day, 7 days per week at 0.4 W/kg (whole body average) for 42 weeks. The RF exposure had no effect on lymphoma mortality or survival rate in a genetically predisposed mouse species. There was a greater relative weight change in exposed animals, although the absolute weight was not significantly different from sham exposed animals. In a subsequent study, AKR/J mice were exposed as above to a 2 GHz UMTS signal (using a "cocktail" modulation to replicate actual UMTS signals). The authors report no effect on growth or lymphoma development. The authors also state the findings did not verify prior reports of Repacholi 1997. The group also reported preliminary findings at BEMS 2008 and the German Mobile Telecomm Research Programe Intn Workshop (Munich, October 2007) of no effect on blood brain barrier permeability with GSM or UMTS from lifetime 0.4 W/kg exposure.
