Model 900 MHz (GSM) exposure to mobile phone users and analysis of their primary lymphocytes for chromosome aberrations
Details

Human lymphocytes obtained from mobile phone users (n=24, using 900 MHz GSM phones for > 2 years or more) were analyzed for chromosomal aberrations (CA) and sister chromatid exchange frequencies (SCE). Subjects included both smoker / alcoholics and non-smoker / non-alcoholics, and were compared with like non-mobile phone user controls. Blood samples from 6 smokeralcoholics were further treated with Mitomycin-C. The authors report a significant increase (P < 0.05) in chromosome aberrations (dicentric configuration) and SCEs in mobile phone users, especially with smokers+ alcoholics, as compared to respective controls. A significant increase in SCE was also observed in all mobile phone users as compared to their respective controls. MMC treatment increased SCE frequencies in smoker / alchoholics indicating a synergistic effect. No effect of exposure was reported for clinical hematological patterns and no change in cell cycle progression was noted.

Limited number of subjects in each treatment group for statistical analysis. RF exposure assessment by simple questionnaire, and crudely categorized in terms of hours per day with no reliable dose accounting for multiple variables of transmit power and actual exposure. The cigarette and alchohol consumption is also not well characterized, and importantly the "smokers" in the control group seem to have less cigarettes per day than the "smokers" in the mobile phone use group !!. There are multiple occupational variables that might also influence the data.
