Model 900 MHz (CW, GSM) exposure to primary leukocytes and analysis of gene expression and stress response

Human peripheral leukocytes (not stimulated to induce proliferation) were exposed to 900 MHz (CW & GSM) at SARs of 0.4, 2.0 or 3.6 W/kg for either 20 min, 1 h or 4 h in a TEM cell in an incubator and analyzed for the expression of heat stress proteins (HSP27 and HSP70). Dosimetry was performed using both FDTD analysis and thermal measurements. Heat stress at 42 C was used as a positive control. The number of cells expressing HSP70 and HSP27 as measured using flow cytometry was increased with heat in a time-dependent fashion. However, no statistically significant effect was detected in the number of cells expressing stress proteins due to RF. These results suggest that mobile phone type radiation is not a stressor of normal human leukocytes and/or monocytes, in contrast to mild heating.

    The authors state possible reasons for the difference between their (negative) finding and the (positive) findings of Kwee et al and Leszczynski et al is that the other investigators used actively growing and proliferating cells, while this group did not
