ID Number 110
Study Type In Vitro
Model 27, 900 & 2450 MHz (CW) exposure to LN71 glioma cells and analysis of growth
Details

LN71 human glioma cells were exposed to 27MHz or 900 MHz RF in a coaxial exposure system (originally described by Guy, 1977, Radio Science 12:87-96) or 2450 MHz RF in a waveguide system (described in Cleary et al., 1985, Bioelectromagnetics 6:53-60 and Liu and Cleary, 1988, Bioelectromagnetics 9:249-257) for 2 hr at SARs of 0-200 W/kg. This study was designed as a replication of 27 & 2450 MHz exposures reported by Cleary et al (Radiatiation Research (1990) 121(1):38-45; Bioelectromagnetics (1990) 11(1):47-56; FASEB J (1996) 10(8):913-919) with the addition of exposures at 900 MHz which are relevant to current cellular telephone signals. The 27 MHz exposure system has been re-characterized by Davis et al. (presented at the 20th Annual Bioelectromagnetics Society meeting, 1998, in St. Petersburg, FL). The re-characterization reports significant temperature gradients, and predicts that the exposure system does not maintain “isothermal” conditions at high SAR as previously described by Cleary et al. Further, the original calculations to determine SAR by Cleary et al incorporated a typographical error from the original reference (Guy 1977, Radio Science 12:87-96), causing him to report SAR values which were only half of the actual SAR values used in his studies. No change in cell cycle progression was observed in cultures 1, 3, or 4 days following exposure to 27 MHz, 900 MHz, or 2450 MHz RF using flow cytometry. Positive control studies using TPA demonstrated the flow cytometry assay was working correctly. In addition, no effects on DNA or RNA synthesis rates were observed using 3H-thymidine & 3H-uridine uptake assays.
