Occupational exposure to workers in the telecommunications industry and correlation with skin melanoma |
Details |
|
Workers in the Telecom industry (landline telecom) were analyzed for incidence of melanoma (the study was precipitated in 1982 by an initial observation at a hospital melanoma clinic in Montreal of seven men working in a single telecommunications company). A preliminary gross comparison with general population rates indicated an increased risk in this working group. A more detailed standardized incidence ratio (SIR) was calculated based on the rates of melanoma in the local population of the Greater Metropolitan Montreal Area for the years 1976-83. An increase was observed in males (n = 10 cases vs. 3.7 expected; OR = 2.7; 95% CI 1.31-5.02), there was no apparent correlation with job title or department. A subsequent study reported no correlation with mortality, and instead a healthy worker effect for both men (OR = 0.57; 95% CI 0.50-0.64) and women (OR = 0.56; 95% CI 0.37-0.82). |
