Mobile phone and ELF exposure to the general public and correlation with cancer. |
Details |
|
Review of both RF (mobile phone) and ELF epidemiological studies. In a review of RF literature published recently (as members of ICNIRP's Standing Committee on Epidemiology) the authors conclude that there is no established evidence of a causal relationship with any adverse health effect, but that limitations in current studies including dose assessment, tumor latencies, and lack of obvious mechanism (or target effect) make conclusive evaluations impossible. They recommend further epidemiologic research, including a large cohort study. For ELF studies, the authors describe a possible relationship between childhood leukemia and ELF postnatal exposures above 0.4 µT (OR from pooled analysis estimated at 2.0; 95% CI 1.27–3.13) - unlikely due to chance, but possibly influenced by bias. Further evidence showed an association with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and occupational EMF exposure, although confounding was potential explanation. Breast cancer, cardiovascular disease, suicide and depression were unresolved. |
