The commentary letter in Lancet states that existing bans on mobile phones in hospitals in the UK should be lifted, and the authors cite the following reasons. First, the MDA tests showed only a limited number of sensitive life critical devices and there have been no subsequent reports of significant risk to patients, and existing policies are based upon largely a precautionary approach and not justifiable based upon evidence regarding patient safety. Finally, the “evolution” of mobile phones currently in use interfere less with medical devices than their analogue predecessors. The letter continues to state that figures from the UK Office of Telecommunications (Oftel) show that 80% of households own at least one, and thus any ban is likely to prove difficult to enforce. |
